Lesson 8: CA and Numbers 1–5

Grammar

CA connects a clause

Suppose you already have these two pieces:

i ilian — I know
run i anvu — you go

Put ca before the second clause:

i ilian ca run i anvu

Click to Reveal Translation *I know that you are going.*

The first I is left unstated because you are talking about yourself. run stays in the second clause because its subject is different.

Notice the pair:

ce asks for information.
ca connects information.

Spot the pair

You know celi = when? What would you expect cali to mean?

Reveal

cali = when in a statement.

One useful extension is cali:

cali = CA + LI time → when

i anefene cali run i boemo

Click to Reveal Translation *I rest when you cook.*

The other CA forms follow the same pattern of changing ce to ca. You'll meet more of them later. ca and cali are already enough to build much longer sentences.

Numbers 1–5

tam — 1
tor — 2
par — 3
bale — 4
alui — 5

Nouns still do not change for plural:

tam eofa = one friend
par eofa = three friends

Vocabulary

Building blocks

ILA — sharing information. Mnemonic: “I'lL Announce it.”
LUAN — tongue. Mnemonic: Spanish lengua, Portuguese língua, English language.

Words

Oravia Meaning Breakdown
ilaluan say, tell ILA sharing information + LUAN tongue
moalen banana MOA fruit + LEN long
anidai want ANI movement toward + DAI desire
apavu run APA physical movement + VU movement

Try ilidai

You already know ILI = cognition. This lesson gives you DAI = desire.

What does ilidai make you think of? We don't expect you to be able to guess new words correctly, but thinking about it may help you remember them.

Reveal **ilidai** = **intention**.

Put it together

From earlier lessons

ilian = know
anvu = go
leirih = tree
yaltan = big
eofa = friend

i ilian ca run i anvu

Click to Reveal Translation *I know that you are going.*

i ilaluan ca a leirih a yaltan

Click to Reveal Translation *I say that the tree is big.*

i anidai e par moalen, mai i mo e tam moalen

Click to Reveal Translation *I want three bananas, but I eat one banana.*

i apavu cali eofa i anvu

Your turn

Connect two clauses with ca or cali, then write one phrase or sentence with a number.
