How to Use This Lesson
This lesson is divided into four sections. Please move through them in this order: Grammar, Vocabulary, Practice, Flashcards.
Do not try to memorize! Just read through the content attentively. The warm-ups and flashcards will bring the vocabulary back later!
Questions
Two AN verbs from Lesson 7 can be shortened when another verb follows:
So i dai i [verb] means want to [verb], and i fou i [verb] means need to [verb].

The IL Cluster
Today we will learn a new cluster, IL! Look at these words.
| Oravia | English |
|---|---|
| ilace | ask |
| ilonya | forget |
| ilian | know |
| ilaluan | say |
| iliro | think |
| iloto | worry |
What do you think the IL cluster is about?
These words cover common ways of asking, knowing, thinking, and reacting to uncertainty.
Recall words are flexible. In which ways do you think these words can be used as adjectives, verbs, or nouns? For example:
| Oravia | English |
|---|---|
| ilace | to ask, question, curious, curiosity |
| ilonya | to forget, forgetful |
| ilian | to know, understand |
| ilaluan | to say, saying |
| iliro | to think, thought, opinion |
| iloto | worry, concern, to worry |
Recognize the Roots
Take another look at ilian. Do you recognize any roots you've learned before?
🌍 Sound Connections
Ce means "what", just like in many Romance languages que/ce.
Nya is empty, from Sanskrit शून्य śūnya (nothingness, emptiness).
To is suffering, like Indonesian tobat (remorse, suffering from wrongdoing); Latin torquere (to twist, torture).
That's why we have:
sunya = nothing, zero; just like ilonya = forget (uncertain cognition + nothing).
sioce = puzzle (games cluster + what?), just like ilace = question, to ask (communication of cognition + what?)
veito = wound (health issues + suffering), just like iloto = worry (cognition + suffering)
Matching Games
Time to practice! Match the Oravia words with their English meanings. Use sound-meaning associations as clues. For example, the subcluster sound tells you the category, even for words you haven't seen before.
If you don't remember or make a mistake, that's totally fine! We will have plenty of opportunities to practice. Right now just give it a try.
Click one word from each column to match them. The game will check automatically when you select both words.
