How to Learn Oravia
Oravia is a language with a small vocabulary that was designed to be fast to learn across linguistic backgrounds. Here's how to learn it.
Oravia Primer
This learning path is the quickest way to learn the basics and to start communicating. By the end, you'll have a sense of how the system works, you'll be able to continue developing your skills, and to interact with content using the dictionary. It's also perfect if just want to know what Oravia is about, or you are not sure yet whether you'd like to go further.
It can be done in a week (for example, core grammar day 1, then 2 lessons a day), as a deep dive, or at your own pace.
- Read the 10-Minute Grammar
- Then, go over Oravia in 12 lessons
That's it, and then you're ready to explore!
Oravia in 2 months
This learning path allows you to communicate more freely and to engage with the language more creatively. You will have enough basis to chat with people, create new words and meanings, write your own original pieces, make choices on style, and play with the language.
First complete Oravia Primer, which is not a requirement, but it's a strong recommendation. Then, this path can be done over 2 months of about 35 minutes per day, or any other pace that feels right for you.
- Month 1: go over the Complete Course, 2 lessons a day.
- Month 2: do Deck 2 under Flashcards, 10 new cards a day. PLUS, engage with the language everyday by consuming content, watching videos and chatting on discord.
That's it! By the end we'll have covered all building blocks, most of the vocabulary, most of the sentence structures, and you'll be ready to use the language comfortably in the wild.
Path to B1
Ready for more? This learning path will take you to a new level. You'll become an independent user, and be able to contribute as a community cornerstone.
For this path, first do Oravia in 2 months. Then, add one extra month on top:
- Month 3: do Deck 3 under Flashcards, 10 new cards a day. PLUS, engage with the language everyday by alternating a) writing your own pieces and translating; b) chatting on discord and reading books; and c) reading the reference content on the website, such as the Comprehensive Grammar, the Guide to Craft and Style, and the Building Blocks.
Conclusion
Oravia has about 860 words built mostly from ~260 building blocks. It also has a simple grammar with a low learning load, designed to complement the vocabulary system.
This means that the more you learn, the faster it gets. Each new piece brings more possibilities of recombination, and the semantic structure helps you build associations. That's how Oravia can be so precise and expressive, while also possible to learn so fast.
Even with just the Primer, it's enough to start experimenting and talking to other learners. The other paths enable you to be more fluid and creative with your expression.
