NUMBERS
Let's take a look at numbers! Here's how to count to ten:
| Oravia | English |
|---|---|
| tam | 1 |
| tor | 2 |
| par | 3 |
| bale | 4 |
| alui | 5 |
| teva | 6 |
| peri | 7 |
| auta | 8 |
| tenda | 9 |
| das | 10 |
Now try counting from 1 to 10! How about backwards, from 10 to 1? How about counting just the odd numbers, and then just the even numbers?
Expressing higher numbers is really easy:
Now try counting 1-20. Tip: 15 is das alui and 20 is tor das.Next, try saying 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90. Tip: 40 is bale das and 80 is auta das.
Great job, you can count to 99! Or should I say, tenda das tenda?
🌍 Sound Connections
Auta is similar to Proto-Indo-European roots, leading to words like Hindi āṭh and English eight.
Das is also like PIE, leading to words like Portuguese dez and Hindi दस das, both of which mean ten.
LI CLUSTER
We will also learn one new cluster, LI. Look at these words.
| Oravia | English |
|---|---|
| lili | again |
| litam | day |
| liyar | morning |
| lisoi | soon |
What do you think these words have in common?
Recognize the Roots
Take another look at lisoi. Do you recognize any roots you've learned before?
🌍 Sound Connections
Li is from Mandarin 历 / 曆 li (calendar).
Yar means "light", like Arabic ضياء ḍiyāʾ (radiant light).
That's why we have:
yoyar = white (color + light), just like liyar = morning (time + light)
Matching Games
Time to practice! Match the Oravia words with their English meanings. Use sound-meaning associations as clues. For example, the subcluster sound tells you the category, even for words you haven't seen before.
If you don't remember or make a mistake, that's totally fine! We will have plenty of opportunities to practice. Right now just give it a try.
Click one word from each column to match them. The game will check automatically when you select both words.
