TO CLUSTER

Today we will learn our next cluster, TO!

Oravia English
touwa thirst
touvei illness
tohpu sad
tounir weak
toului tired
tohnaru anger

What do you think the TO cluster is about?

🌍 Sound Connections

Vei means "health issues", and comes from Sanskrit वैद्य vaidya (physician).

Pu is like Persian پوچ pūc (emptiness, loss).

Wa is water, from the Polynesian root wai (water).

Here are other words that use these roots:
anopu = to lose (movement away + loss), just like tohpu = sad (emotional suffering + loss)
wimwa = lake (natural geography + natural), just like touwa = thirst (physical depletion + water)
viwa = blood (internal body + water)

Now try to create a sentence using TO words, or 3 if you're up for a challenge!

Matching Games

Time to practice! Match the Oravia words with their English meanings. Use sound-meaning associations as clues. For example, the subcluster sound tells you the category, even for words you haven't seen before.
If you don't remember or make a mistake, that's totally fine! We will have plenty of opportunities to practice. Right now just give it a try.
Click one word from each column to match them. The game will check automatically when you select both words.
