Lesson 3: Negation & Modifiers

Grammar

Want to negate something? Add -um

Attach -um to the word you want to negate.

i mo → i moum

Click to Reveal Translation *I eat → I do not eat.*

The same suffix can negate other kinds of words besides verbs:

yalgai = small → yalgaium = not small
boemo = kitchen → boemoum = not a kitchen

Modifiers come before what they modify

yalgai boemo

Click to Reveal Translation *small kitchen*

The same order also explains the possessive phrases from Lesson 1: in nim boemo, nim narrows which kitchen you mean.

Words are flexible

A word does not need a different noun, verb, and adjective form every time its role changes.

boemo = kitchen
i boemo = to cook

mo = food
i mo = to eat

The markers and sentence structure tell you how the concept is being used.

Vocabulary

Roots: connections across clusters

A root usually comes after the opening cluster. Unlike a cluster, it can show up across very different kinds of words.

Compare:

anvu = AN action + VU movement → move / go
beivu = BEI vehicle + VU movement → drive / car

AN tells you that anvu is an action. BEI tells you that beivu is a vehicle. Both end in VU, movement.

You have already seen the same pattern with DUR:

vardur = VAR face/head area + DUR hardness → tooth
yudur = YU subjective quality + DUR hardness → hard / difficult

The opening cluster gives the broad semantic domain of the word. The root adds another association.

That helps explain a word like eofa:

eofa = EO social relationships + FA family → friend

Because EO is the opening cluster, eofa belongs to the social-relationship domain. FA adds the association with family or closeness.

Just as with clusters, roots are clues meant to help learning, and they may not always be exact science. If an association makes sense to you, use it. It may help you remember the word.

Building blocks

BEI — vehicles. Mnemonic: be in a vehicle.
EO — social relationships. Mnemonic: Each Other.
FA — family. Mnemonic: family / familia / família.
YU — subjective qualities. Mnemonic: how YOU experience it.
LEI — plants. Mnemonic: leaf.
RIH — higher, rising. Mnemonic: RIse High.
APA — physical movement. Mnemonic: A Physical Action.

Words

Oravia Meaning Breakdown
beivu car, to drive BEI vehicles + VU movement
eofa friend EO social relationships + FA family
yudur hard, difficult YU subjective quality + DUR hardness
leirih tree LEI plants + RIH rising
aparih jump APA physical movement + RIH rising

Spot the connections

Compare vardur / yudur and leirih / aparih. What repeats?

Reveal

DUR = hardness, connecting vardur “tooth” and yudur “difficult/hard.”
RIH = rising, connecting leirih “tree” and aparih “jump.”

The same idea appeared in eofa: the opening EO gives the broad social domain, while FA gives another semantic clue.

Put it together
