Lesson 26: Sequences

How to Use This Lesson

Every lesson is divided into five sections. Please move through them in this order: Warm-Up, Grammar, Vocabulary, Exercise, Review, and then Exercise and Review once more to see how much you've improved.

Do not try to memorize! Just read through the content attentively. We will have plenty of exercises and reviews later!

Sequences

The NO Cluster has two very interesting words: notam and notor. Do you notice anything in these words?

We use these to express timelines! We have:

notam = no + tam (one) = event that comes first, earlier
notor = no + tor (two) = event that comes second, later

For example:

Notam nim i mo, notor i bonfene = first I eat, second I lie down

You don't need to use both, you can use just one and leave the other implicit, like this:

notam nim i mo, i bonfene = first I eat, (second) I lie down
notor i bonfene, i mo = second I lie down, (first) I eat

In English, this often corresponds to before/after, depending on which event you use as reference.

Celi run i anifi en eompela?
When are you coming to the party?

Notam i anona e moulu u fani.
First, I give milk to my baby.
Celi run i anepou e anse?
When do you stop work?

Notor i anepou, i anye e hoi borcai.
Second I stop, (first) I make this wall.

Now try to create a sentence using notam and notor, or 3 if you're up for a challenge!

YU SUBCLUSTER

Let's take a deeper look at the YU Cluster!

Oravia English
yuvabo comfortable
yugai easy
yuba good
yudur hard
yufer dirty
yuloa perfect
yunmir rich
yunro smart
yunpili timid
yunfou poor
yunitam special
yunmpou lazy
yunrani beautiful

What subcluster do you see here and what do you think it's about?

Yunmir means something like "having a lot", as in "rich culture". To specify rich as in wealthy, you may say gerina yunmir, but in practice many shorten this to yunmir as well.

๐ŸŒ Sound Connections

Mir comes from Sanskrit เคฎเฅ€เคฐ mฤซr (leader of many).

Here's another word that uses this root:
roumir = book (writing + many), just like yunmir = rich (subjective quality + many)

Ce run yun?

You are ready for the exercise now!

Matching Games

Time to practice! Match the Oravia words with their English meanings. Use sound-meaning associations as clues. For example, the subcluster sound tells you the category, even for words you haven't seen before.
If you don't remember or make a mistake, that's totally fine! We will have plenty of opportunities to practice. Right now just give it a try.
Click one word from each column to match them. The game will check automatically when you select both words.
