DA CLUSTER
Today we will learn the DA cluster!
| Oravia | English |
|---|---|
| dasu | accept |
| damura | meaning |
| davio | change |
| daco | answer |
| davir | exact |
| dateli | situation |
DA words are about evaluation. They cover meanings related to assesment and analysis.
A couple of DA words are very important. We've already seen dami and dairan. Let's take a look at two more: dasora and davio.
First, dasora means purpose. Since this is such a common word, we frequently use just the root, sora. Take a look at some examples:
I anvu en bevio sora i gerina e omja = I am going to the store to buy a guitar
I omlia sora oila = I sing, purpose: happiness / I sing in order to be happy
Many times, this would be translated to English as to, for, in order to, or with the purpose of.
The second word is davio, which means become. We use this word when we want to say something turns into something else, and is usually accompanied by no. For example:
hay i dai i davio no omapa hai = he wants to become a dancer
falen i davio no yalen = the child is becoming tall
falen i yalen-davio = the child is becoming tall
🌍 Sound Connections
Co is related to communication, from Latin communicare. Vir is about method, exactness, procedure. It is related to Sanskrit vrit, which also means procedure.
Here are other words with these roots:
rovir = science (knowledge + method), just like davir = exact (evaluation + method).
omco = voice (music, sound + communication).
To sum up: i davio no = to turn into, to become (da)sora = purpose, in order to
You are ready for the reading now!
Today we will re-read Curupira's story, with a twist! The sentences and meaning will be the same, but the word order will flip.
The word order we have been using so far has been mostly Subject-Verb-Object, like a falen i roesau e ompili (the child learns piano). Today, we will see a different but also common order, Subject-Object-Verb.
Word orders like this are very common worldwide and occur in languages like Japanese and Hindi. To mirror a different word order, here's what is going to happen to the text today:
. the verb will go to the end of the sentence, like a falen e ompili i roesau (the child learns piano).
. secondary and modifying clauses will go to the front. For example, mioci ca i sioerar su fano becomes fano sioerar mioici (monkey that had been playing with their offspring).
In order to read the story, just remember: the markers indicate the role in the sentence, not the order! Keep your attention in the markers. Now let's give it a try.
