Lesson 16: To Exist and To Like

How to Use This Lesson

Every lesson is divided into five sections: Warm-Up, Grammar, Vocabulary, Exercise, and Review. Please move through these tabs in order.

Do not try to memorize! Just read through the content attentively. We will have plenty of exercises and reviews later!

How much do you remember?

Check the boxes for words you think you know. Then click Show Answers to reveal the meanings and uncheck any you got wrong.

To Exist and To Like

Today we will learn two very common words from the DA cluster. We will not look at this cluster yet, but these two verbs are fairly important.

The first one is dami, or exist. We use it to form sentences such as there is/there are:

i dami a moaria  = a moaria i dami
This means there is an apple, or an apple exists.

i damium a moaria  = a moaria i damium
This means there is no apple.

The second verb from the DA cluster we will learn today is dairan. dairan means to like.

nim i dairan e moaria  = I like apples
nim i dairanum e moaria = I don't like apples
nim i iran i mo = I like to eat
The usage of dami and dairan is the same as any other verb.

Extended family

Last lesson we learned the numbers. Do you remember how to say 1, 2, 3?

Oravia English
tam 1
tor 2
par 3

We will use the numbers to talk about extended family! Remember the nuclear family words we've learned?

Oravia English
fare parent
fasu sibling
fano offspring

They are actually mapping the relationships!

re(l) = up
su = with, side
no(u) = below
If you imagine a family genealogy tree, you see that parent is one generation up, offspring is one generation down, and sibling is one degree to the side. When the number is 1, this is the default, so we don't need to add tam.

Using the numbers, we can express other relationships, for example:

fatore = two up = grandparent
fatorsu = two side = cousin
fatorno = two down, grandchild

Can you guess how we would say greatgrandparent? Instead of two up, we use three up!

We can express any relationship based on the map of the family tree. For example, here's how you would say uncle and niece:

faresu = up side / parent sibling = aunt/uncle
fasuno = side down / sibling offspring = niece/nephew

To sum up:

dami = to exist
dairan = to like
(fa) re = going up in the family tree
(fa) no = going down in the family tree
(fa) su = going sideways in the family tree

Now try to create 3 sentences using these new words:

GE CLUSTER

Today we will learn our eighth cluster, GE! Look at the list of words below.

Oravia English
gedom bank
gerina money, to pay
geyosa bet, risk
gelna buy, a purchase
gelsar charge, bill
geldove sell, sale

What do you think the GE cluster is about?

You are now ready for the Exercise!

Matching Games

Time to practice! Match the Oravia words with their English meanings.

If you don't remember or make a mistake, that's totally fine! We will have plenty of opportunities to practice. Right now just give it a try.

Click one word from each column to match them. The game will check automatically when you select both words.
