Lesson 14: Connectors

How to Use This Lesson

Every lesson is divided into five sections: Warm-Up, Grammar, Vocabulary, Exercise, and Review. Please move through these tabs in order.

Do not try to memorize! Just read through the content attentively. We will have plenty of exercises and reviews later!

How much do you remember?

Check the boxes for words you think you know. Then click Show Answers to reveal the meanings and uncheck any you got wrong.

Connectors

We already know how to create many kinds of sentences.

a [subject] i [verb] e [direct complement] u [indirect complement]
ce/ceidom/cei...?
a [subject] a [something]

Today, we will learn how to connect sentences.

The first connector is su, it means and, with. For example:

(a) Pedro su (a) nim i mo = Pedro and I are eating
nim i mo e mocen su e moaria = I eat chocolate and apple
nim i mo su i mouje = I eat and drink

The second connector is dou, it means or. For example:

nim i mo e mocen dou e moaria = I eat chocolate or apple
oi dou um = yes or no
a run a iloto dou iloi? = are you worried or hopeful?

The third connector is mai, it means but. For example:

nim i moum e moaria mai (i mo) e mocen =
I don't eat apple but I eat chocolate
"ceidom rune fano?" = where is your son?
"i ilianum, mai ilotoum" = I don't know, but I am not worried.

Finally, our last connector is eta, it means therefore. For example:

nim i ilonya, eta i ilace = I forget, so I ask

To sum up:

su = and, with
dou = or
mai = but
eta = therefore

Now try to create 3 sentences using connectors:

EO SUBCLUSTER

Last lesson, we learned about the EO cluster, which are words related to social connections.

Today we will learn EO Subclusters! Look at the list of words below.

Oravia English
eomfel event
eomsu party
eompela parade
eodya invite
eodani meet
eodenbor visit

invite visit

What do you think the EOM subcluster is about?

How about the EOD subcluster?

In this cluster, we also have three important words:

Oravia English
eon greeting
eoren honor
eori polite

That's because these words have important functions:

Oravia English
eon greeting, hello
eoren honor, mr. mrs. ms.
eori polite, please

For example,

Eon, Eoren Lee! I ilahai u nim, eori.
 ↓     ↓            ↓     ↓      ↓
Hello Mrs. Lee! talk to me, please

So, to sum it up:

EOM = social events (party, event, parade)
EOD = meeting people (invite, meet, visit)
eon = hello
eoren = mr. mrs.
eori = please

Ps. Two words in the list were inspired by the sounds for into house and social approach. Can you identify them and their meaning?

Matching Games

Time to practice! Match the Oravia words with their English meanings.

If you don't remember or make a mistake, that's totally fine! We will have plenty of opportunities to practice. Right now just give it a try.

Click one word from each column to match them. The game will check automatically when you select both words.
